Mail provides list of suggested words (not spell check)

So I'm typing an e-mail today, and go to send it. Except that I'm typing it in Mail and I normally use Notes, so I mistakenly press "esc" (which is what I use in Notes).

To my surprise, I get a list of words that could be substituted for the word I had last typed (an example is shown below). I played with it for a minute, testing different words (I have never seen this before), and then suddenly the "trick" didn't work.

However, I created a new message and suddenly it worked again. I couldn't see this documented anywhere, nor could I figure out why it stopped at some point.

I thought this was an interesting feature, but one I'd never heard of. Anyone else know something about this?

Interesting. Haven't seen that before. Not that I ever press Esc when typing something in Mail.

Could be very useful actually... maybe I'll have to look into using Mail a little more often.

It's a feature of Cocoa textboxes that option-escape completes text -- so that if you have a word spelled fully or partially, it completes it.

But in Mail, I only get this in the address/subject fields. It doesn't work in the body text.

It does work in textboxes in Safari like the one I'm typing in right now.

That's where I saw it. I didn't try it in the address boxes, but assume it's just a search function for other addresses.

Don't hit option-escape, just escape. I just tried it again and it worked. I haven't upgraded to 10.4.3.

Yeah, I tried both and a few other combinations.... nada.

It's working for me in Mail but only when the curser is in the middle of the word, not at the end. As a side note, how annoying is a transparent scroll bar.
