Mail Question

Someone please help. Currently, I am having to use an aol dail-up connection, and I am wanting to send emails using Mail with my .mac account. The reason I want to do this is because I want to email some pics, but they are just too big. Since Mail has the option for sending pictures in a smaller size, i figured it would be the best thing to do. However, I believe my Mail program is set up wrong. I was using a cable connection and was able to send and receive with no problem. But now all i can do is receive. I am running Panther on a powerbook if that helps. If anyone has any ideas if what the problem might be or of a way to shrink photos and just send them using aol I would very much appreciate the feedback. Thanks.

SMTP

It's some problem with the smtp server settings. I've had the same problem; when I'm at work, I have no .Mac usage, and no Comcast smtp (outgoing) access. It might be external firewall settings; I myself am really not sure, sorry.

To solve your problem for the time being, try using another program to resize and shrink your photos (iPhoto, Photoshop); save as medium-compression jpeg.

If anyone has an smtp solution, please post it.

This is what i use but it only works with a hotmailaccount but it works really well.

Quite often your ISP will block access to SMTP servers apart from their own. So, for instance, when I'm on a wireless network in a coffee shop, Mail works fine using the .mac smtp server. When I get home, it stops working because my ISP blocks it, and I have to swap to using the ISP's SMTP server. This only happens for sending mail - you can still recieve mail fine.

I think this is what's happening to you. AOL is blocking access to whatever SMTP server your Mail is set up to use. Try changing your mail account settings to use the AOL server (probably something like smtp.aol.com).
