MAIL: Stop automatically marking messages as read

Since there is no way to turn off the preview pane without using the classic mode, is there a way to stop every message you go through from being marked as read immediately upon it being highlighted. In outlook there is an option to mark it read after x seconds or only if it is opened or replied to. Is there any way to stop it from marking messages as read automatically?

Not to my knowledge.

By the by it is perfectly possible to turn off the preview pane.

There may be other extensions, but it's a minor feature of Mail Act-On.
