Downloaded El Capitan.
After installing and trying to open Mail each time I open I get a window that says:

Mail Upgrade
Upgrading Library

Both the Quit and Continue buttons are greyed out and the progress bar is frozen a quarter in. Even after quitting and restarting it continues with the same message. Any help would be appreciated.

With Mail quit...

Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts
Uncheck Mail in each account

Go to User's Library (see below for help)
Rename Mail folder to Mailxx

In User's Library > Containers move the com.apple.mail folder to the Trash

Log out/in under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts
Add back one account to sync Mail. I would choose the one with the least amount of mail first.

Open Mail
It should open in a new profile and download your data from the server.

Add back each account one at a time. Verify the account is working before adding other accounts.

Show User's Library

The User's Library folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

If you have any POP account and/or have messages stored locally under "On My Mac" folders, you can import these from the Mailxx folder or from Time Machine.
