I use gmail. Old Apple Mail account I used a decade ago downloads thousands of emails when I open, all in slide layout, not columns.

I want to save a few old emails and delete the rest. Most of these are alerts from my calendar.

It takes so long to open all these windows that I end up force quitting before they all get done – hours or maybe never.

Any help? I can't change to column layout as that is grayed out, I suspect until they're all downloaded.

I'm using IOS 11.6.8, and Mail version 14.

Thanks for any help.

Does changing the Mail Preferences > Check for Mail from Automatically to Manual allow you to select the column layout (so the download doesn't start automatically and you have a chance to change the view)?
