OS X Internet Recovery
Newer Macs include the ability to start up directly from an Internet-based version OS X Recovery. Your Mac automatically uses this feature when the Recovery System on the startup drive isn't available. For example, if your startup drive encounters an issue, or if your startup drive has been replaced or erased. Internet Recovery lets you start your Mac directly from Apple's servers. Starting up from this system performs a quick test of your memory and hard drive to check for hardware issues.

Internet Recovery initially asks you to select a Wi-Fi network and enter a network password when needed. Next, Internet Recovery downloads and starts from a Recovery System image. From there, you are offered the same utilities and options as the Recovery System on a startup drive.

Some Macs that came with OS X Snow Leopard can use Internet Recovery after installing OS X Lion or later and a software update.

With the machine connected to an internet connection, boot into Recovery Mode and then reinstall Mac OS X.

Non-cylendrical Mac Pros do not have Internet Recovery.

I have attempted this and when i sign into my Itunes account it says that the product is temporarily unavailable.

I am thinking about this as well. However, from memory, only ML and afterward can be download and install via recovery partition. Also, the user must already purchase that OS in Appstore in order to use this function. But I am not 100% sure that.

I only sure Mavericks and Yosemite's recovery partition has this function. However, his recovery partition seems still the Lion version.

I'm able to download 10.7 on my one test machine. At this point, I would suggest either waiting a few hours to see if the problem gets resolved, located a Snow Leopard installation disc, or contact Apple Support.

I purchased this Mac from a friend who does not have the discs.

Lion's Recovery Mode is able to reinstall OS X from the internet: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3878 The Mac App Store may be having some problems right now. Do you have another Mac you can attempt to download Lion with?

Yes, you are right. I remember the constrain now (Lion can only be download from Appstore but no disk available. And only 10.6.6 or later has Appstore available in the OS). An OS that only available on the internet, of course can be downloaded in the recovery partition. Silly me :p

Anyway, since Lion is not a free OSX. I think OP need to purchase that before he can download it in the recovery partition. Otherwise, he may not able to get through the "Apple ID + password" phase.

I concur that it must first be purchased before it can be downloaded via the Recovery partition. You will have to enter the Apple ID and password of someone who has purchased Lion. If you are unable to do this, you must either purchase Snow Leopard and upgrade from there or contact Apple Support and purchase it via them. I suggest the first option of purchasing Snow Leopard and upgrading from it.

Ok thanks for your help!
