maintenance OS X / G5 (what's the best tool?)

Ok, I want to know it now.

What's the best way to maintenance my computer. Ik hear bad things of Nortor that it fixes more than needs to be fixed. I hear good news from Tech Tool and Disk Warrior.

But the fact is that I heard friends getting problems with hard-disks, while running Tech tool pro 4. I can't start up from a Norton disk and my server gave me a kind of never seen before darwin error??

What's your oppinion?

My internet provider told me Norton Antivirus is causing a lot of problems.

It looks like Norton Antivirus deletes infected files and thus destroys more than you want.

I see that you are a newbie to the forums, so I'm guessing that you are new to the mac. Macs don't really need as much taking care of like its PC counter parts. OS X defrags files smaller than 20 MB, so disk defragmenting is not really needed. Then only thing that is needed at least is to use Disk Utility to repair permissions after updates. If you want one of the products above, I would say Disk Warrior.

Your internet provider is full of it. Norton Antivirus doesn't delete infected files, it removes the infection from them. What is more, the only infected files that you will have are M$ Office documents. Even if Norton Antivirus removed an infected document, it would do no harm to your system. It seems, however, that you are confusing Norton Antivirus with Norton Utilities. Norton Utilities are problematic and have been problematic for quite some time. Most Mac people will tell you to run the other way when you see Norton Utilities coming. DiskWarrior is great. TechTools and Drive 10 are highly respected. Norton Utilities deserves their growing reputation of being dangerous, at worst, and useless, at best. Even on Windows, I find that Scandisk and Defrag can do what Norton Utilities can't. However, Norton Antivirus is not Norton Utilities. The Antivirus program can't protect you from Mac viruses because there aren't any, but it will disinfect any infected files that you receive from your Windows Weenie friends.

I have never used it but I have heard many people trash talk it on these forums they say it really screws up you system ie. deletes random files and slows down your system. If I were you I would not bother with it. Disk warrior is good. Personally I use TinkerTool and OS X's Disk Utility and thats good for me.
