So it appears Apple really hasn't thought importing and viewing Live Photos on a Mac through that much.
How often do you actually plug your iPhone into your Mac to sync your pics to the Photos app? The answer is probably close to never. Instead, most people rely on Photo Stream to sync their pics over Wi-Fi. As far as Live Photos are concerned, this is a major problem because Live Photos are not synced via Photo Stream–only the still image portion is. But for some stupid reason, once the still image part of a Live Photo is imported to Photos for Mac even plugging in your iPhone to your Mac and trying to manually sync the full Live Photo won't work. Photos reads that the Live Photo has already been synced (even though only the still image has) and won't import the "Live" part of it.
The only way around this is to delete all the still parts of the Live Photos from Photos.app on your Mac, then plug in your iPhone and manually find every Live Photo and then resent those Live Photos manually–oh, and do all of this before Photo Stream starts syncing just the still portions again.
It's frustrating that Apple has left this major issue in with Live Photos syncing. Live Photos are actually insanely cool, too bad 99% of people won't know how to view them on their Mac because of the sync problem I've described.
(Oh, also, it would be nice if all Live Photos were sorted into a dedicated Live Photos album int he Photos app on both OS X and iOS.)
