Major Networking Problems with new Apple TV (2010)

Hi,

I recently purchased a new Apple TV (2010) to set up at my girlfriends house. The set up is very simple: she has a cable modem that plugs into an Airport Express, the Apple TV connects to the Airport wirelessly.

I set up the Apple TV no problems at all, everything worked great, I connected to the network, entered in my netflix account info and everything was up and running. I ran into a problem when I opened up my Macbook Pro. It shows full connectivity to the wireless network but I have no internet access.

I get a message that says, "another device on your network is using your computer's IP address. It gives a weird IP address that isn't even close to the IP addresses that the Airport Express should give out (169.254.111.112). The Airport is set up to give IP addresses in the 10.0.1.X range.

After I get my Macbook Pro to access the internet the Apple TV stops working so I can't use both at the same time.

Any advice on how to fix this? I am guessing I will have to connect to the network manually instead of by DCHP?

It is very frustrating, I had no problems whatsoever with the Roku player I bought her and had no clue I'd have so many problems with the Apple TV.

Edit: I'm not sure why I told you to flush the DNS, you actually want to renew the DHCP lease:

No, I'll give that a try when I go there tonight. Does this do something with the IP addresses?

Try flushing the DNS on the MacBook after powercycling the router:

Correct, No static IP addresses for any device. I should have mentioned this in my original post but my iPad and iPhone can't connect to the WIFI either.

The ATV2 works fine, no slow downs except when starting up on an iTunes show or Netflix show. The problem is with all other computers/devices using the network. i.e. iMac internet is slow, iPhone using wifi is slow, Hulu on any computer is slow.

Not sure what's going on. I put ATV2 asleep and same issue, I unplug it and the network is fast again. Anyone having this issue?

YUP. It also drops my airport extreme every now and then and I have to reset the airport extreme...

It gives a weird IP address that isn't even close to the IP addresses that the Airport Express should give out (169.254.111.112). The Airport is set up to give IP addresses in the 10.0.1.X range.

IP addresses in the 169 range are assigned to the computer when it can't get an IP address from the router, which is the reason you can''t connect to the internet with your MBP.

Seems you are having the same problem with your iPhone and iPad which points to the airport extreme.

Try resetting the airport extreme.

Also, just check to make sure DHCP is on on your Airport Extreme, and that the cable modem doesn't have a DHCP server of its own.

Two simple things to try:

Turn off all the components (router, ATV and MBP) then turn them on one at a time with the router first.

Verify different IP address for all network components. There is an iPhone app called iNet that is great for looking at everything connected to your network and helpful in checking the IP addresses. The ATV shows the IP address on the setup screen and your MBP will show it from the control panel or from the 'about this mac' screens.

Good news. The Apple TV and all my other devices are behaving properly. The IP addresses seemed to have fixed themselves overnight. I didn't do anything to the Airport Express, Apple TV, or any settings on my MBP. Went to her house yesterday and everything was working.
