My Mac Pro Early 2008 is freezing/dying with increasing regularity. Problem is that I do not have the Apple Hardware Test disk that would have originally shipped with the machine. I downloaded a disk image for a 3,1 Mac Pro (https://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Hardware_Test/018-3273-A.dmg) but what do I need to install its contents onto? A USB thumb drive, a CD, or a DVD? And how do I do that in a way that results in a bootable disk?

I'm sure the answer is obvious, and I keep trying to find it, but I'm coming up empty.

Based on some A/B tests where I've swapped in different RAM, I suspect that some bad RAM might be the culprit, but I'm a little out of my depth here.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
DM

This is the reference article about Apple Hardware Test, just follow the instructions to create a bootable USB stick:

Thank you! I was trying to find that very thing on GitHub!

I seem to have identified the bad RAM, and have replaced it with RAM from a different machine. All is good thus far, so I'll keep my eye one it. Very helpful to have the link you provided.

I’ve also noticed that the PSU can go in those machines and can cause weird issues that don’t turn up on the diagnostic LEDs or in the hardware test!

Fingers crossed it’s all good though!
Thanks! No further issues since I swapped the RAM. I'm thinking the PSU is okay.
