i think i can do this by define keyboard command, correct? everytime i press the f keys though for expose/dashboard, it just does the motion and isn't registering it as the keystroke that i want.

how can i achieve this? (i want to say "computer switch to dashboard" and have dashboard open)

I believe you could set something up like that under the speech preference pane in the system preferences. First turn on speakable items, if you hadn't already, and then see if there is anything available for dashboard. I'm sure there's something you can use. That might not have been too helpful, but it's a start.

In your head.
I would open the Speakable Items menu, and attempt to make the applications speakable. Techincly Dashboard is treated as an Application, I am not sure about Expose.

or

Create an AppleScript to excute the Expose and Dashboard functons and drop the scripts into the Speakable Items Folder.
