To help preserve space, I put my music on a SD card and set up the music app to not copy files to the internal music folder when importing.

However, today I edited the title info/tags on a song via the Music app but when I checked the song file on the SD card, the change didn’t carry over to the file like it normally would have when my music files were located on the Mac’s internal storage. So I manually made the change to the audio file on the SD card but then when trying to open the get info about the song within the Music app, I had to locate the file for the Music app due to having changed the original file.

How can I get the Music app to write changes made to songs to the external SD card? I tried right clicking on the SD card and choosing the get info to see if I could adjust permissions but the permissions section at the bottom was not editable. There wasn’t even a lock that I could click on to unlock permissions editing functionality. I also tried right clicking on the Music folder on the SD card but same problem.

Is it possible to format a SD card to APFS? And if so, will that allow me to have the music app write changes to the song files on the SD card?

I managed to get it working by following some instructions I found on another website. I needed to move the library file that was still on my internal storage. Then hold the Option key while opening Music and navigate to the location where I put the library file on my SD card and selected the library file. Also went in Music settings, went to the Files tab and changed the Music Media location. Rechecked the option to copy files to the Music folder. I also made sure to delete the original library file on the Mac.

I was able to edit the title of a song and have the changes reflected on the song file on my SD card.

Is the SD card you're using right now... the ONLY PLACE that your music is stored?

If so, it's "in danger".

You need to get it backed up to a "second drive" somewhere.
External USB drive, another SD card, someplace.
Otherwise, if that SD card goes bad... POOF!

Thanks for checking, but no that particular SD card isn’t the only place I have my music.

I have my music in my iCloud Drive, on a USB stick, and on the local internal storage of both of my iPhones. And both iPhones have an encrypted backup which is saved on a completely different USB stick.

A portion of my music is also in Google Drive and I have a good number of physical CDs that I could re-rip onto the computer if need be.

I definitely believe strongly in multiple backups.
