Make Mountain Lion Bootable USB Flash Drive with Lion DiskMaker (Free) App

I found this great little application, which I actually used to create a bootable Lion USB drive when Lion came out. It has now been updated to support installing Mountain Lion (and is signed app, so it will work with Gatekeeper). You don't have know anything but how to click and it does the work for you. Oh yeh, you do have to download Mountain Lion first from the Mac App store, but after that it makes it real easy.

Looks interesting, but I'm hoping that Apple release an official version on day one instead of waiting for 2 months like they did last time. There's no reason why they can't do it at the same time, and I have three Macs to upgrade! If they don't come up with one I'll certainly give this one a shot...Thanks for the link!

We're new to macs in my house. I'm used to windows discs that have a serial number to install the software. Is OS X not like that? If I put my ML download on a USB drive like its described on that blog can I use it on another Mac in my home? I'm used to needing to buy a family pack or various serials with windows for separate computers. Not trying to scam Apple just genuinely curious.

There is no difference between the official drive and the custom one except that the one cost more.
Also apple mentioned that this release was MAS only.

Buy once use on as many computers that you own. No serial code required. No family pack. Just create the bootable USB and you are good to go.

I'm always curious why people need all those 3rd party apps for something so easy like extracting dmg to flash-drive. Disk Utility is enough for this.

agreed but some people are just more comfortable leting a script do the job with one click instead of the 4 clicks it takes the traditional way

Just because you want to save time doesn't mean you're necessarily a 'beginner'. I could launch every app from Terminal if I wanted, making things easier doesn't mean the user is any less capable.

I personally love this application and I am not a beginner. It makes it easier for me and anyone else that just wants to click, and when the program finishes, you end up with a flawless USB Flash Drive for Lion or Mountain Lion.

Me too. I'm certainly no beginner but I love the simplicity of this little tool. I used it last year for Lion, and will definitely use it tomorrow to create my emergency ML installer.

Yes, download ML first. It'll place an Install OSX Mountain Lion app in your applications folder. Then, just download and run the script from the link in the first post. It's super easy. Just wait for the end where after the script appears to be done, it looks like it verifies everything and then a "yippeee" sound comes on (if you have speakers on). I had the speakers on loud and it scared the bejesus out of me.
