Make recovery media of lion from new mba?

How does one make a install dvd/usb recovery media of lion on new mba?

I know how to make from “Mac OS X Lion” installer download (ie InstallESD.dmg.)

Wondering how one makes from already installed lion on new mba?

Will we be forced to dl for $29 or buy usb stick for $69 (see below) to have a install media?

ps: i notice macworld says apple will sell usb lion aug..."And despite all the talk about Lion being available only via the Mac App Store, the company plans to release a $69 version of Lion on a USB stick in August."

You can't.

It should be possible to clone the recovery partition onto a USB stick yourself, but that only gets you part-way, since the recovery partition slips out onto the internet for the actual install bits. But it would be enough if you just need a portable recovery partition.

That only works if you buy Lion from the App Store, not if it comes with your Mac.

looks like only option is using carbon copy to make image or bite the bullet and buy $29 dl and make own usb install media

edit: wonder if one could use carbon copy and place recovery partition onto usb stick and boot from that if needed and do clean install?

On my broadband connection it takes eight hours to download 4.5gb so I certainly don't want to be tied to the internet to do an emergency reinstall (for what ever reason I might need to do one) so it looks like I'll be sporting out another 30€ for an OS I already own the right to use, bummer

Can't you do an emergency install from a Time Machine backup?

Your "broadband" connection takes 8 hours to download 4.5gb? Even in peak usage times I can do that it in a few minutes, and my broadband isn't fantastic.

i have default internet bb here in cdn from telus...would take me 5-8 hrs

i read at 9-5 about whole internet recovery ect ect....seems m$ like to me....apple why not package new airs with usb lion...like last gen...

Couldn't you just use the "Restore" feature in Disk Utility? -- Restore from Lion Volume (drag your startup disk to "Restore From") and then "Restore to" -- select your USB stick, and it will mirror your entire contents of your disk to your USB stick.

The Recovery HD partition is hidden. There is a mod to Disk Utility to enable a special menu which will give it the ability to see all partitions. I believe I saw the article at MacFixit today. Personally I stay away from plist mods, in general, to avoid possible update issues.

The other option is to use Terminal and the utilities diskutil and hdiutil. You can get the partition name using:

% diskutil list

Then, create the DMG using hdiutil (using disk0s3 as example - check using diskutil):

% hdiutil create -srcdevice /dev/disk0s3 recovery_hd.dmg

By default, the DMG file should end up in your home directory. Now, you can use the DiskUtility app to restore the DMG to USB drive, CD, or HD partition. Note that the USB drive, or HD, must use GUID partition map and the partition formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) (this is the same you would need to do if making the Lion install disk).
