Hey I just wanted share a cool trick I just discovered. I could not find a topic anywhere else so I thought I'd share it. You can use Quicktime X to trim your mp3's into ringtones.

1) select the track with quicktime X
2) select edit -> trim; trip your clip
3) when you're finished, save as, select iPhone
4) rename file from m4v to m4r
5) drop into itunes ringtones section & sync!

You're still limited to a 40 sec. ringtone. I found this to be easier than using the garage band method since it's very similar to creating ringtones on itunes. Only one downside I found, no fade outs.
 
GB = Garage Band. I too feel more comfortable in Garage Band and fading my tracks
