Make someone appear / dissapear in flames / smoke

I have two clips

Clip one - empty throne
Clip two - person in throne

How can I make it look like they're appearing in flames / smoke?

I have fcpx, motion, after fx

Likely method I think- freeze frame frame 1 of Clip 2, draw a mask around person, then add a fire or smoke thingy filter to it
