Make TV screen black during Airplay audio playback

I have the new Apple TV and am trying to stream audio through it to either my television or my sound system. My sound system does not have optical inputs on it, so I purchased This Item to convert to a Composite Digital output that my sound system does have. The sound sounds very far away and subpar.

In trying to troubleshoot this problem, I began to think if it would be possible to route the audio through my TV but make my Apple TV output a black screen. Is this possible?
