Making 1-1 copies with the superdrive

Hi guys,

I have a question.Maybe you can help me out I'm new into all this mac and internet business...
I have a Imac with this superdrive thing... is there some programm I can download or get somewhere that can make exact 1-1 copies from a DVD to a DVD-R?I don't mean ripping but exact copies.

Can you help me out and tell me some stuff I need to know... I really want to copy a DVD and see if it works...

i don't belive that legal, but i could be wrong. I dont know of any for mac. DVD XCOPY for pc but that doesnt duplicate, it makes a file that has a hidden watermark so you can't make a copy of a copy, i think thats the only legal way to do it.

P. S. I do have limewire installed so i definetly ain't preaching here, just saying

illegal and impossible. 1 the DVDs are encrypted and 2 most commercial DVDs are exceed the 4.7gig limit of consumer DVD blanks.

Step 1. Make sure you have lots of HD space.
Step 2. Make sure you have the right media size.
Step 3. Put in the DVD, open Disk Copy, and Make an image from device of it with the same name, in the CD/DVD master mode (sorry, really tired, can't think exactly which menus these are in).
Step 4. Put the blank in, and Burn the image from within Disk Copy.

Jeez you people are quick to jump on a guy... where did Drummer ever say that he was wanting to copy commercial DVDs? It's not illegal to copy a DVD, it's illegal to copy copyright material. Which he didn't say he was planning to do. There's no need to be so self-righteous.

Hmmm well it was mentioned from DVD to DVD-R.....

He'll have no problem copying DVD-R's. it's not a problem making a copy of a DVD-R

Commercial DVD's.... now that's a problem....

alright I thought it was legal if you bought a DVD to copy it and then keep it within your own 4 walls - if you don't sell it you can make as many copies as you want, can't you??
I just don;'t want to scratch or break the real DVD...

But yes it is a commercial one...

What does GeeYouEye mean with copy diss - is that program ... remeber I'm a stupid beginner...

You have to use Disk Copy, it's in your Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. Select "New" and "Image From Device" from the File Menubar and select the DVD disc. If the DVD data is bigger than 4.7 GB, though, you're out of luck.

Fair use still applies to DVDs and CDs, regardless of DMCA or what the RIAA or MPAA would like you to think. That is, you are allowed to keep a backup copy of your software/music/movie for yourself.

So, would it be possible to save the movie on the harddrive and watch it from there? Also, if so I suppose it could be compresses in iMovie to less than 4.7gb...right?

I've never tried it, but it may be possible. Then again, there may be encrypted and invisible files that make it so it cannot be read from a copy. As a matter of fact, I think that may be what they employ. I'll have to try it with my shiny new (French, but made in USA) 80GB LaCie FW HD and see what happens.

Anyway, I can't wait until DeCSS proggies are a dime a dozen...

Yes, I rip the dvd's i already own. I spend 1/2 the year in Europe and 1/2 in the US. I travel often back and forth on biz. I travel with my back up dvd's because you never know when you are going to lose your luggage, or have your stuff stolen out of it. Remember the old days with air travel, when people would check their laptops with their regular luggage and get to their destination and wooopssss no laptop.
Traveling by train in Europe is even more sketchy ( I am not bashing Europe ), no corporate or police people wanting to deal with it. Especially if you travel from one country to another.
Once, on a train from Florence to Vienna, we had a back with laptop stolen from our sleeping car. When we reported it to the authorities, they were very helpful. The Austrians said it "must" have been stolen while we were in Italy, so it was not their problem. The Italians said it was stolen in Austria..........

Therefore, I will back up my DVDs and if you have a problem with it, F### off

In 2002 cd sales went down 9% from 2001. But read the fine print.
The number of albums the record industry released was 15% less in 2002 than 2001.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that with 15% less choice, less music will be sold.

Fair use does not apply to what's being discussed in this thread.
Fair Use entitles people/organizations to take small samples of copyrighted material for comment, criticism, educational, and/or journalistic purposes.

Example of Fair use. A TV station shows clips of the movie "Anger Management" during a review of that movie on the local news.

Can you legally make back-ups of your own software, music and DVDs for personal use? Yes. But that isn't Fair Use. Can you legally do anything to defeat or circumvent copy protection? No (thank you DMCA...).

Hi,

I have managed to get to the disc copy but when I copy/create an image... I have several options - What I want to do is burn the image to a DVD-R - I'm lucky because the DVD-R I have holds 4.7 GB and the data on the orig. DVD is only 3.8 GB so it'll fit...buuut:

What do i chose if I want the exact image like on the orig. DVD... I have several options:

+ Save as - that's clear I'll just chose a file name
+ Where - is cool too...
+ What kind of image format should I chose?It gives me these options:
1. read/write
2. read/only
3. compressed
4. DVD/CD master
+ And the Encryption - it gives me the two following choices:
1. none
2. AES-182 (recommended)

So what am I supposed to to do? After I have created the image - I just burn it with File->burn image ?

Ooooh there it is haha - sorry!But still - what does the name have to be the same with?when I put the orig. DVD in my drive it's just called: "DVDVolume". So I call it that?Or is that something different?
