After i install an ssd as a second drive to my iMac using this video from OWC, is it possible to make that ssd drive a primary drive so that the system boots from it from the beginning?

Yes... open System Preferences and go to the Startup Disk pane and select the SSD as the boot disk then restart. From then on the SSD will be the boot drive.
