Making USB flash drive work on Mac and PC

So I followed the directions I found to mount the drive on the Mac and use Disk Utility to Erase it and format using exFat. It still works on the Mac but when I insert it in my Windows 10 machine I get a message that the drive has to be formatted. What to do?

Try the other way around.
Format it ex-fat under windows. It should work flawlessly under MacOs also.

Thanks. I tried that and then the Mac didn't recognize it. I recently discovered that it may have just been the particular older flash drive that I was using. I formatted a newer one on the Mac and then it also worked on the PC.
