Malware protection/phone sweeper?

Long time iPhone user here. Been hearing great things about the Pixel so I picked one up at Best Buy last night.

My last experience with Android was the Galaxy S5. Scrolling through the popular apps I see a ton of these apps. Are they still necessary with Android?

No. Just use common sense and essentially don't go installing stuff outside of the playstore to circumvent app purchases or third party rouge apps to obtain pirated / free media content.

Keep it legit and you should not need virus or malware protection on your smartphone

If you are talking about the unread notification type badges, than yes, Android has them. Here's an example of my Twitter app having a badge on it.

It actually depends on the launcher you use.

Stock Android doesn't have them, however Samsung / HTC stock launchers do.

Third party launchers such as Nova support them (you need to install Telsa Unread for Nova) and ActionLauncher 3 latest update supports them as a beta.

And that would be my problem. On stock android, Nova is usually one of my first installs. I'm currently using the LG launcher so that I have the screen off capabilities.

Thanks. Since you're here, is it possible to have badges on apps like iOS?

This was one of my concerns as well, but I've found that I just left the device stock for the first couple of weeks. I wanted a different experience, not a similar experience that I could get on iOS. Now, I don't miss the notifications on the icons at all due to the notifications in general being better on Android.

That said, as @MRU mentioned, some launchers have this as an option if it's something you'd prefer. If I wasn't going to use the Pixel Launcher, I'd probably go with Nova launcher as that is a really nice launcher with a lot of customization options.

I'm using Nova and really enjoy it. I'll check out Tesla Unread.

I used Nova + Tesla on my Android when I had one. So, I would advice you to expect some minute bugs but that'd we OK. I hope they may have removed bugs in their latest versions.

Check out http://www.zdnet.com/security every week, lately last 6 months there are exploits against large number on popular consumer grade routers. DNSChanger, and of course the plethora of IoT devices are very insecure for botnets to take control of.
