Mac seems to be so darned lazy (sorry if i offended anyone there) that there are no movies or tv shows or rentals or just about everything on the Australian iTunes Store. So for all us Aussies, the Apple TV is rendered useless.

It's not Apple being lazy - it's the fact that they have to re-negotiate content with the copyright holders for each country (which can vary from country to country, making things even more difficult). Hence the US (being the largest market) gets tackled first, then they start working on other markets.
Personally, I think the ATV is pretty compelling even without the rental content - I'll be picking one up as soon as we replace our current TV with an HD model....

You can use it to watch all your ripped content too you know? 
As well as listen to all your music and look at your photos.
In the UK we still don't have any movies and only a handful (of crap) TV shows. Yet my ATV gets some real hammer because I have 117 movies and 100s of episodes of TV shows I've ripped from DVDs etc that I tend to watch quite a lot and I'm adding more all the time. Infact I just ripped another movie this morning.
I have rented a few US movies via ATV and I must say its a great experience. I just wish you could buy movies from it too. I am more of a 'keeper' than a 'renter'.

Just wondering. Do you have a company like Netflix in the UK?
Can I ask a question? There is a lot of talk of ripping DVD's. Are people ripping rented movies or something? Just don't quite understand how people have all these movies that they didn't buy. Isn't that kinda illegal? Maybe I am missing the point. Plus are people still ripping old DVD's or are you ripping BluRay / HD-DVD's?
I have ripped my DVD collection to iTunes so I can watch them on my TV as I don't have a stand alone DVD player.
Yea ok but Apple has taken so long! It's been several years waiting for tv shows to appear on aussie iTunes.
I just back up the DVD's that I own. I like to have a backup incase something should get scratched or even worse, my dog gets to a DVD.
Every movie I rip, I already own the DVD. I want to get my movies into a digital format so I can store the actual DVD in my attack....not taking up shelf space and requiring dusting, etc.
I have over 200 movies ripped, and a little over 100 more to go.
Yeah we have 300+ DVD's here.
We go to auctions and estate sales buying up collections when we can find them.
Music CD's .... last count over 700 here, but I have not ripped them as yet.
Rented movies? I haven't rented a movie in over 6 years, don't think I'll start renting anytime soon.
I just bought "American Gangster" from Best Buy for $4.99 ... it's the " deluxe package with 3 disks, one a 'digital copy' and a book.
It's like I stole it, but they had a special going.
Didn't apple release tv shows in August 2005? Two and a half years is several? I suppose it could seem like it if you are desperate.
