Manage Apple ID Question

I am trying to log into appleid.apple.com and it is popping up a box that says Update Your Apple ID. It is asking me to verify my apple id. I press the the Continue button and get the message

You can only add the @me.com address that is already on file in your account.

I have a me.com address that has been my apple id for a long time, the one I logged in with.

Anyone have any ideas as to why I get this?
