I have a Mac Mini happily running Snow Leopard Server that I've been administering from a MacBook Pro running Lion. Upgrading to an MBP that won't run anything but Mavericks seems to have left me unable to remotely administer the server. The Server Admin tools I once used are no longer available. It looks like if I "upgraded" to Mavericks Server, I could load Server on the new MBP and control the server, but I am extremely leery about messing with a machine that does exactly what I want.

Any ideas about options that might solve my problem?

I just ran into the same issue, replaced all my Macs and now run Mavericks on the client side, Snow Leopard server has been rock solid as will remain as is.
I used the little app called Screen Sharing Menulet, it worked ok, no complaints. Then I tried Apple Remote Desktop, that works fine as well, either way you can get your work done with one of them.
