Managing media files

Hi all. I am about to get the MBA as my only machine. I currently use a PB 12" with 100 G HDD that is about 80% full. Obviously I won't be able to transfer all my media files (iTunes and iPhoto) to the MBA. I wondering what strategies are people using to manage media files when using the MBA as the only computer. Putting media files on an external drive or Time Capsule is obviously an option. Would a portable drive be more prone to failure? With a portable drive, the media can be with me all the time.

So, what are your setups? What are the pro and cons for putting media files on external drives? Would I be easily synching to my iPod Touch or a future iPhone? Thanks!

Not wanting to completely fill my MBA's hard drive/SSD with iTunes songs is precisely why I started researching how to store your files on another machine and access them remotely using your MBA. As long as you can create a network connection to another machine or to a Time Capsule or similar device, you can store pretty much everything off the MBA.

Frankly, I would not want to use the MBA as my ONLY computer. I love this thing dearly (am typing on it right now) but it really is not meant to be someone's only machine. IMHO it's truly meant to be a supplement, a mobile solution, while one has a desktop or a larger, heavier laptop at home (or work).

I have not installed iTunes on my MBA and am not planning to do so. When I am at home I don't need to do it, as I've got other machines and my iPhone and iPod to provide me with music and video entertainment. On the road I've got my iPhone and iPod, too..... However, if I do have the urge to make my iTunes library available to me through the MBA I will adopt the elegant solution Clayj has developed... Or I may go ahead and put my iTunes library on the 160 GB mini-G-Drive that I bought to accompany the MBA on trips.
