Manual checking of e-mail

If you sent the iPhone up to manually check for e-mails, does the iphone only check for e-mails when you click the mail button? In other words is it wasting battery usage when you have the phone sleeping? Do people press and hold the 'home' button to close out of mail (or safari) to reserve battery power?

Yes, the manual setting for email means you press the Mail icon to check your email. You press the Home button to exit out of Safari or Mail or any other program you're in. This doesn't waste battery, I'm not sure I understand your second question.

Are you asking, that if you set your iPhone to check email every so often, does it waste battery? If you want it to check your email, it's not wasting.

thanks for the reply. What I mean is that if you leave safari (for example) open even if the phone is sleeping, does that waste battery juice? I just ask because I read somewhere that you can save battery by closing out of the program by holding down the home button for 5 seconds and then put the iPhone to sleep. Not sure if there is any truth to that.

The iPhone will shut off after a minute of non-use. You can change those settings, but I don't know by how much (mine's in the other room charging yes I'm too lazy to get up right now).

Once the screen locks and shuts off it goes on sleep mode.
It doesnt matter if you had safari on or email. Everything just powers down.

First, no you wont save power force-quiting apps. If anything you could corrupt the flash disk files/file system. The whole force-quit thing is an "urban legend" sorta thing. EVEN if it did, the time you spend doing this to each app will consume the same potential power if you just locked the screen.

So dont do it.

However, if mail is set to check every so often it will consume power since the phone has to idle up, activate Edge, check for mail, etc....

But like said above, when in sleep mode everything powers down. This was a slight hurdle for developers of AIM apps and such that needed to stay active with the phone in standby.

So if the iphone is set to check for new mail every 15 minutes, will it 'wake up' from sleep to do this?

Or will it wait till you activate the phone again before checking for mail?

The 1 thing that I miss about my blackberry is that it was able to receive mail instantaneously...

Your mail will be sitting there on your phone with a red circle visually indicating how many new emails you have. to see this you'll have to have turned the screen on obviously, then touch mail icon with red circle.

What I've notice is even after I've set it to Manual checking, I still get email notifications that I've just received email. Now do I still get charged for data use? Or only if I decide to open the inbox and email?

I just worry like for example I'm in Canada, I don't wanna get charged for international download usage not covered under the free unlimited usage.

Can someone shed some light on this?

is this on a yahoo email account? because that will hit your phone whether you have it set to manual or not and then there is your data use you're afraid of.

ANYTHING that used Edge will be data usage. So checking for mail is, your sending a username and password to the server for example. Stocks, weather, etc.. all use Edge as I am sure you know.

And yes the phone wakes up from lower power every 15 minutes, for example, to check for mail and alert you. The screen may not come on, but it does power up to check. So to save power, its best to just manually check it.
