Is there a way to manually theme iOS 7 as Winterboard does not work, really want to get rid of the ugly iOS 7 icons.

I've done it that way before of course the downside is the only way to get things back to normal is a restore. I'm holding out for updated MS and winterboard. What you could do is what I'm doing is working on the icons now so when we get things working you can just apply your theme and icons. Right now since the JB isn't patched yet a restore won't be that bad, its once the JB is patched you'll be stuck. By stuck I mean once JB is patched you won't be able to undo and mods you make.

BTW I'm using ifun to browse the device from my Mac.

I've done it through SSH but the icons come out darker, does anyone know why?

I've written a series of highly illustrated tutorials about how to theme for years. While these are called themes with winterboard, you can still benefit from learning about the location of the files that are swapped out in these guides and still change the look of your phone without winterboard.

The most important thing is to back up your original graphics that you replace, just in case... These tutorials go all the way back to the summerboard days of 1.x.

If you rename the original files and don't just overwrite them you can easily undo any changes without restoring.

Possibly the image format / compression process when you created the images. I noticed that i could create an image in both Microsoft Paint and Macromedia Flash MX (that takes me back..) and when you save the image in PNG format, the colours change slightly because of the compression the image editing software uses when it creates the image file. See if you can use zero compression, and see what happens.

Yes I realize that but if you forget to backup it gets messy. The very first time I started messing with it I didn't backup the files. Then Apple came out with an "update" and I ended up loosing my JB. YES I was stupid lesson learned.

Apparently icons DO work if in WinterBoard you turn SummerBoard mode on and respring. I haven't tested it myself as I can't Jailbreak yet, but it's worth a try.
