Hi there šŸ–ļø

After my 15" 2017 MBP spontaneously died Tuesday evening, I had to get a new one fast.
My old MBP had violet stripes and secured itself with the Firmware password. Therefore, I couldn't see anything on the external screen. On Tuesday I was working on it and everything was fine. I made my time machine backup, closed the lid, and one hour later I wanted to continue working. Then the screen only showed the violet stripes.
I planned to get a new M3 MBA anyway, but now it is a bit earlier, as I use my devices typically for 6-8 years.
Yesterday, I went to an Apple Store and bought a 13" MBA. As I need this for my daily work, I had to get one fast. Unfortunately, they just had a 16 GB RAM and 1 TB Version. I would have preferred to have the 2 TB. They said I can just test it and bring it back within two weeks. If I need the 2 TB Version, I have to order it online, as they only have the 1 TB in stock. As I carry the MBP / MBA daily to work, vacation, etc., I hate to use tons of adapters, external drives, etc. I want it easy and lightweight. Furthermore, at school (I am a teacher) we don't have wifi or any other internet connection, so I can't depend on cloud storage. As I don't need the power or performance of the MBP, I thought about the MBA. The M2 anyway has better benchmarks than my previous MBP. Therefore, I bought the MBA yesterday.

To my questions: Is there a possibility to find out when it was produced? The 13" MBA got an update when they released the 15" MBA. When I put in the money and get a new one, I would like to receive a new one. (Bluetooth 5.3 etc.). The only info I could find is that the battery was produced 2022-12-19. Therefore, it is old. Furthermore, in the store, we tried to turn the MBA on and it was dead. 0% battery left. That's why I think, that this is an old model. Is there a possibility to find out, if it was built before or after the release?
I can return the M2 till Sep. 29th to the store. I am thinking about it because I think I would prefer the 2 TB which I can't get in the store. Then I would definitely get a new one. Also, I could get a bigger charger instead of the dualport charger.

Otherwise, some more info on my old MBP. The Apple Store tried 3 hours to get access to my old MBP to transfer all data and to set it back to the roots. They could enter the firmware password because it didn't accept any commands or keys. Thus, they could enter the password.
They first thought, that the display cable is punctuated and therefore, the cause of the problem. But as they couldn't see anything on the external display and whether the internal nor external keyboard worked, it seems to be something different. What do you think? Maybe the logic board? As the logic board is one of the three huge problems of the broken 2017 series (next to the butterfly keyboard and display cable). Apple already changed my logic board three years ago, to prevent any problems.

Is there any way to delete all data on the old MBP? What do you think? Which problem could the old one have?
And for the first part of the long text: Is there a way to find out the production date?

Excuse me for the long text and thank you in advance for your help and time :)
I really appreciate it.

"Is there any way to delete all data on the old MBP? What do you think?"

If there's no way to boot it, because of the firmware password, I'm thinking the only way to "delete" it is to physically destroy the logic board beyond repair.

Sledgehammer.

You can go to this Apple page and get probably some info. The battery manufacturing date isnā€™t a good estimator for your Macs birthday (besides that the Mac was assembled after the battery was made). Otherwise: why do you think that a current model line device, assembled at some point during the last 9 month , is ā€œoldā€? And what should that mean?
