iPad Many password problems...

I woke up today and there was a message on my Mac that said that my Apple Id was being used by "Dolly". Dolly is an old iPhone 6+ I have and it does have my Apple Id password but I had not been using it. I thought it was powered off but I'm not sure at this point. Dolly seems fine. I can log into it and it seems content with my Apple Id. But I got worried.

Now, I've discovered that the password on my Mac is weird. Most of the times, the correct password is not accepted but it was accepted when an application (Install Disk Creator) asked for it.

I have a Time Machine backup as well as a Carbon Copy Cloner backup. I might have goofed slightly because I updated the CCC backup just now. I may should have not done that.

MalwareBytes Premium says that I'm clean.

I'm currently rsync'ing my home directory over to a Linux box as a third backup. Eventually I plan to reboot and see if I can log in. I have an Install USB stick ready to go if I need to wipe everything out and start over.

Why am I telling you all this in the iPad forum?

Well... I have an iPad Rosie as well as another iPad Lola and an iPhone Vina. Lola and Vina seem fine but they have not asked me for my password yet. So far, the face id is working. But Rosie won't let me back in.

I've tried this process two or three times but each time it comes back up, it still wants the password. When I click Restore, it says "Gee... I need to Update and Restore. Is that ok?" and I say "yea". I can't get it to just "Restore"

So... all this to ask if there is a way to factory reset my iPad and then restore it? I've tried going to iCloud and do the "Erase iPad" but it is "pending" and has been for a half hour now.

There is a Mac application called 4uKey that says it can reset the password but I don't know if I should trust it.

Any suggestions as to what happened? How to reset my iPad? Any advice on my Mac?

Hey, fingers crossed! I wouldn’t provide any passwords to a third party app or let that work on anything really. If Apple’s tools don’t work, I’d rather work with Apple Support until they work again.

Thank you all for helping. You probably have already guessed but I'm a complete idiot. My device passwords fit a pattern. But, I wasn't remembering the pattern correctly. So, my Mac password is actually fine. That's why "sometimes" it took my password. Because I wasn't thinking and my fingers knew what to type but if I thought about it, I used the wrong password.

But my iPad is being restored to factory defaults a second time. Here is my new question if I may:

I'm on Catalina so I'm using the Finder and not iTunes. I did DFU restore and used my iPhone and Apple Id to bring back the iPad most of the way. Then I did the restore from backup and when it restarted, it wanted a password. Which password? I never gave the iPad a password since the DFU restore. I did give it my iPhone password as well as my iCloud password but that's not the iPad's password.

it should be asking for the same passcode you use for your phone.

Sorry... RTFM... it tells you on the screen where you give the iPhone password that it will become the password for the iPad. Should I just go back to bed?

Yes, you are restoring software on your iPad. The process will ask you to enter a password. That's the password that you want to use for your iPad. It can be any password, doesn't have to be the password that you are using for a passcode on another device (although that will make it easier for you to remember, if you use the same passcode on all your devices.)
And, it will ask you to verify that password by entering it a second time.
Again, you are not required to use the same passcode on all your devices (unless you want to do that)
The password that WILL be the same is the password part of your AppleID.
But, that one will either show you your AppleID, or you will need to enter your AppleID, but will certainly ask you to enter your password. That will be the same AppleID password that you use on all your devices, and your Mac, too. (Unless you have more than one AppleID account.) But, that will not be the same as your (login) passcode, which can be (and should be) different on each device. That passcode that you use on the new restore on your iPad becomes the passcode used for unlocking the iPad. It is not related in any way to the passcode on your iPhone -- it can be the same passcode, or completely different. The choice is yours at that point.
