I just got a new Bluray Burner "LG-BH12LS38".

It works great, It was recognized by the MacPro without issues, I tried already Ripping several DVD's and BluRay discs without problems (I haven't tried burning a bluray as of today).

My issue is that when I am not using the burner I can hear a small "click" at random intervals for 5-10 minutes, the typical noise made when the drive tries to read the DVD, but there is no DVD and I am not trying to access nothing (even when computer is idle)

Anybody has a clue what is that?

Many people have asked this. Nobody has an answer for it. The only known workaround is to leave a disc in the drive. It doesn't have to be a blu-ray disc.

Really? A pretty well known issue?
But is this only for LG drives?

I know there are some drives made for MAC (Like MCE????). I still have the option to return the LG.

Thanks

Yes, it's a well-known issue and not just for LG drives.

As I recall the only for-sure solution is to get a BD drive from OWC, but they charge a lot more.

I recently bought an LG drive from OWC, blu-ray read but not burn, for $58. It has the same issue as the OP, every 5 minutes or so it activates. It's irritating.

I should add that OWC tech support person knew nothing about this kind of issue.

It's not only blu-ray drives.
It's not only LG drives.

It is a common issue with non-apple optical drives.

I don't think my Blu-ray drive actually has the problem you mentioned (I never heard it unless it's actually working), but mine's a Pioneer. Or perhaps I'm just deaf. ;)

Pioneers in particular have that issue where they "disappear" if the hard drives go to sleep (but you can circumvent that by turning disk sleep off), but other than that, no issues for me.

I'm not sure if MCE would be any better. They simply rebadge drives and charge more for them. About the only advantage MCE has right now is if you have a 2006-08 Mac Pro and don't want to use up a SATA port (they sell IDE/ATAPI drives that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere).

With all this in mind, I'm looking to buy an external Blu-Ray burner for use (Mostly) with my iMac, but will also be using it with my MBP too. What's the best one around? (That won't click and drive me nuts in recording sessions)

It is to do with putting disks to sleep check box.

If I untick the 'sleep disks when possible' box, it fixes the problem. The default timer is 10 mins, hence the time span!

Clearly OS X thinks the drive isn't a normal disk drive and therefore it wakes every so often.
