The update will be to Montevina because a Penryn update now would be pointeless. I know a lot of people don't want to hear this, but the update is a few months away. I can see Steve Jobs talking on stage about the new Montevina platform and using the iMac to launch it. It makes sense since Intel will be releasing the chip early June.

My predictions for iMac WWDC you can quote me on:

1. Montevina Chipset
2. Updated Graphics Card
3. No Matte Screen

If I get all of these right, someone owes me a drink.

Montevina is scheduled to be release in June. It could be up to a month before Apple can get them, and it might take longer before Apple puts them in the iMac. After all, its been a couple of months since Penryns release and they still aren't in the iMac. There is no reason to believe the Montevina launch would be any different.

Except that Montevina is actually not much of an upgrade from Santa Rosa.

There will still be Penryn CPU's inside the iMacs with Montevina, and the integrated graphics upgrade will not affect the iMac that has a dedicated graphics card.

Moreover, the lower wattage CPU is not going to mean much on a desktop, and I can't really see Steve getting 'the crowd' excited about support for WiMax with Montevina

The iMac will be updated next week or the week after, Montevina will be added in August.

Just a point on Nehalem, its the CPU for the Calpella chipset which isn't scheduled for release till Q2 2009.

I was just basing that on the early adoption has had with Intel. I'm probably wrong, however i can only see the pro being updated once a year

Also the big seller with Montevina is WIMAX support which is far less cool in a desktop.

It is a complex and full time job keeping up with Intel product cycles- a job best left to UberGeeks like AnandTech.

You need 100 posts before you can use the marketplace. This avoids having people register on the forum just to sell their crap/spam the forum with BS. Also, it gives people a little time to develop a standing in the MR community, thereby having a bit of reputation on the line for a sale, and helps avoid people ripping other people off.

That's how I look at it, anyway.

1. 1066 mhz system bus over 800 mhz on all "current" consumer mac processors... thats a ~10% performance boost in of itself

2. DDR3 ram support... another performance booster. montevinas on roids and its a wireless platform.

3. WiMax support... Apple is behind this technology big time.

being that montevina is a processor platform based on the 45 nm tech of penryn, here's the stuff montevina and the current penryn chips support

a. SSE4 instruction set... software that actually makes use of this will show up around montevina's launch

b. lower power usage... greener baby

c. less heat production... this is actually a big deal for the iMac and Mini given those all so adorable skinny cases.

montevina chips are mobile platforms, which is ofcourse what apple uses in its iMacs.

Nehalem is scheduled for Q2 2009 (with the Calpella chipset), which could mean June 2009 (and probably will), or even later.

So I see it happening like this:

By end of March 08 - new iMacs and Minis with Santa Rosa Penryn

September / October / November 08 (depending on sales and how Calpella is looking) - Montevina update

Q2 2009 (April - June) - Calpella update - and possibly a modest design refresh to accompany it.

As soon as the Mini becomes value for money (which should hopefully be in the next update), I'll be buying one!

p.s Nehalem won't just be another 10% increase on Penryn under Montevina, it will be a significant jump (although in 'normal' end user terms, processor power is pretty much sufficient as it is).
