Markings on iPhone 4?

I was going through apple's gallery and comparing the white and black versions, i noticed something on the white that has got me curious as to what im seeing:

Over the ear piece, it looks like a few black lines and im not quite sure what they're there for. Can anybody provide me insight (my guess is that they're also present on the black model, but not as prominent).

it's a sensor, it's on the black too just not very visible... it's below the glass so no, there are no holes... how have you not seen this already? lol.

never really noticed them since i originally took interest in the black model, but slowly started gaining interest in the white one...
