Ok... so I got the iPhone in early September...
and for a long while, I didn't have a computer with XP on it, so there were no issues with anything at all, I used a friends laptop which had Windows XP home, and there were no problems whatsoever.
Enter two weeks ago, and MY computer with Windows XP home. I plugged in the USB cable for my phone so I could put some songs on the iPhone to listen to. Initially, for a little while, everything was fine.
Then randomly, out of the blue, every single time I connected the iPhone to the computer, using the same USB 2.0 port each time I started getting a problem where when I plugged it into the computer, I would get that little "ding ding" sound to say I had plugged in a USB device, and almost immediately, it would "ding dong" to say I had unplugged a USB device, when I hadn't touched anything! The iPhone switches in the blink of an eye repeatedly to not being connected to the computer, to being connected, and back again. 9 times out of 10, it registers the Apple iPhone Camera device, but won't register at all in iTunes.
When it does register in iTunes, it shows up for a moment, gives me random error messages, and then disappears.
These are my 2 primary error messages:
"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone """" because an invalid response was received from the device"
"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone """" because an unknown error occurred (0xE0000035)."
I researched the latter of the two messages there, because it was the most common, and many people said once they installed XP SP3, that the problem went away. So last night, I installed on my computer, Windows Service Pack 3. Rebooted, and initially, I thought "good, no problems"... but as soon as I tried to put some songs on the iPhone, it went back to repeatedly connecting and reconnecting itself.
When it finally stayed connected for a decent amount of time, I decided to click the "Restore" button in iTunes, and do the decent thing, restore original settings and update with the new software.
The phone went about the majority of doing that. Only know, its incomplete.
The screen of the iPhone shows the iTunes logo at the top of the page, with the USB cable pointing to it underneath, which I assume means "connect to iTunes" so I have plugged it in, and turned it on...
And now I'm getting ANOTHER error message *sigh*
This one reads:
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone
Check the SIM card is inserted and that it is not PIN-locked"
The SIM card IS inserted, and given I had made a call on the phone only moments before trying to restore and update it, I doubt its PIN-locked. I don't even know what that means. But now I can't use the phone because its as though the update hasn't completed, and the phones software is corrupted. I'm at a loss, and don't know what to do. I need DRASTIC help! Please.
And before anybody asks... NO, I have not used Jailbreak on my phone. I don't have the guts to do anything potentially illegal to it. All I have done at all is upload some music onto it (when it will let me), some music videos, and some custom ringtones from Audiko. Thats IT.

I am terribly unhappy at the thought I may have stuffed my iPhone by doing something that is completely and totally LEGAL through Apple iTunes!
