Well, let's suppose that at some point Apple decides to give a matte option for the iMac to us "whiners", how could they do this from a technical point of view ,since the glass seems really part of the iMac aesthetic? Cut a hole through it? Treat the glass? Remove the glass?

I think that the glossy screen is part of the aesthetic only because it goes well with the glossy black glass border (and maybe the shiney apple symbol). However, I think it may look OK if the entire glass piece was replaced (including the black border). Doesn't matter to me, however, as I'm a fan of the shiny stuff :D.

Treating the glass is the most likely option. But I don't think it could be as matte as the surface of an LCD display, probably more like a CRT with anti-reflective treatment.
It might be a problem to find someone to do that for them at a decent price though.

Hence why I don't think a matte screen is ever coming. If they remove the glossy glass, they'll have this odd looking set back LCD screen, and it'll just look tacky.

They'd have to redesign the imac by moving the LCD screen foward so it's not set back so far, and the removing the glossy glass. I just don't see it happening like that.

If anything, as rainydays said, they'll probably treat the glass, but even that won't be good enough for some of the "whiners". I also personally think it'd be cheap of them to try and claim that as being a matte screen.
