When will the existing 7,1 Mac Pro in the 12- or 16-core-version be maxed out by a Silicone-Mac? I mean in CPU-benchmark and in GPU-performance? Do you think it might happen in 2021 or will have to wait till 2022? Which model might reach better performance than the 2019-Mac Pro that will always have it's advantages for sure?

I think this macpro will have the same life as the last powermac G5. Supported only a couple of years and out performed by the next generation of laptops. I'm waiting the new apple silicon macpro to replace my 5,1.

But if you need VMWare or Parallels to run x86 OS, the current macpro will remain the most powerfull for a couple of years

It's easy to see how the CPU side will even out pretty quickly. It's already looking really strong for the current segment and now it's only a question of how far Apple will scale it.

The GPU side is much more of a question mark right now. Currently there isn't much there.

If Apple makes a 6K Mini Led iMac with basic HDR capability and doesn't completely neglect the GPU side, that would be a solid buy for 98% of all users.

I'm thinking the next set of Apple Silicon (for top-end 13" and entry 16" MBPs) will still be slower.

I bet the 12-core will get topped Late 2021 or Early 2022 whenever Apple gets around to making a worthy Apple Silicon replacement of the 2020 5K iMac.

The 16/24/28 core models may hold to top until Apple releases an 8,1 Mac Pro mid/late 2022.

Edit: this seems relevent: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/12/07/apple-silicon-macbook-pro-imac-pro-2021/

Thank you for your inspiring ideas. I just got my M1 Mac Mini two weeks ago and still wonder if should not have got an 2020 iMac till the stronger silicons arrive. But for video editing the M1 is not bad at all even it is no solution to replace my Mac Pro 2010 for music production. So I wait

Part of it has to do with how quickly Apple intends to ship things like AR/VR and possibly an Apple Car if they’re actually doing it. Either of those need the types of capabilities that Apple would use as the key differentiators for a Pro desktop. Untethered AR/VR in particular needs a very powerful Apple GPU and both need the raw compute.
