Hi, new to the forums and couldn't find a thread on this. I'm about to order an iMac i7 and plan to upgrade the ram myself, of course (sorry Apple this sucker ain't paying $200+ for 2 gigs). Anyway, the Apple site says up to 16g but I've heard the OS supports up to 32. Anyone have a +16 gig setup in theirs?

Well, this only applies to the dual core models. The quad can handle up to 32GB.
I am quite surprised I rattled off that answer when the memory controller is on the CPU.

To the best of my knowledge, Sandy Bridge processors finally allow the usage of 8 GB density DIMMs in a 2 x 2 configuration for a maximum of 32 GB of RAM.

On the older LGA 1156 socket you are limited to 16 GB. Even Gigabyte's fancy pants six-slot P55 motherboard had you limited to 16 GB. You just have more slots to allow lower density DIMMs to reach 16 GB.

Hey guys, I have been reading MR forums for 4 years now and was never a member, I am not here to step on anyone's toes or make anybody mad or upset, I just need serious help with Mac things, since there are a lot people who have greater knowledge than I do on all things Apple. I have a Mid iMac 27" Core i3 with 4 GB of RAM, IYO what is the highest I can upgrade to, and where can I get the best deal for the RAM. I have not idea with the DDR3 specifications thanks a lot, I appreciate your help and time.

I would get the 2 stick kit to fill up your remaining memory slots

OP 16 is max. as stated by others here. What apps do you use? I would say get 8Gb unless you feel you may need 16GB. If you have extra funds I invest in a SSD for even better performance.

Eh I just picked up 8 to add with the stock since I heard they should mix with no probs..for some reason in pc's ive never mixed sizes of ram but that's just a mental thing :D
Im sure 12 will do me fine

WOW!!! thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. I use my iMac for graduate school work, recording music using Logic (I have been playing the piano for 19 years), watching movies, just an all around beast of a machine. So my final question, should I add two 2GB sticks to each slot equaling 4GB + 2GB + 2GB or just fill each slot with a 4GB stick so it will be 4GBs in three slots. Thanks once again

You have 4 slots.

2 are filled with two 2 gig sticks = 4 gigs

you should fill the other two slots with 4 gig sticks = 8 gigs

4 gigs original + 8 gigs new = 12 gigs with all slots filled.

what's the difference

4.0GB PC10600 1333MHZ SO Kit (2GB + 2GB)

Versus

4.0GB PC10600 1333MHZ SO-DIMM 204 Pin

Thanks again
