Hey everyone, I have always been a maximum performance junkie when it comes to an operating system. No startup programs, no background apps running, if I could it would be stripped to the bone running at its maximum performance. So, what can we do to limit a lot of idle battery usage, and random cpu usage, and performance hogging services running in the background on iOS?

I’ve disabled background apps from refreshing, and notifications from apps that are not needed, iCloud backup is off, and iCloud is off too. My email is also set to push manually. Are there any other things I should disable?

I imagine a lot of people really bog a iPad or iPhone down after time.

Performance is butter smooth 100% of the time. And I just want it to stay that way.

Reduce Motion, Reduce Transparency, Require Attention for FaceID, Disable Location Services, Disabled Find my iPad,
Just a few you didn’t mention. Make sure your on a 5Ghz MIMO WiFi Router.
Hard Resest, by doing volume up then volume down taps then Long hold Power button until it self restarts.

Ok well I’ve done all of those above steps. Accept for WiFi. I’m always on cellular. I’ve got a little over 4.1GB of free ram after booting up, just sitting on the home screen.

There’s not many optimization guides on iOS. Usually all of them are for old devices.

I assume everyone would want there iPad as fast as possible.

You’re mostly disabling features that in turn makes the ipad less useful, so no. I want certan apps (mail in particular!) to notify me, I want to be able to find it if it’s lost or stolen. I want certain apps to be able to know my location in order to be useful, etc.

I don’t get the point of doing these things unless the ipad is intended for a single app usecase where every drop of performance in it matters. In which case a PC/Mac app maybe would do the job better anyway.

I’ve left location services on, Siri is on, Face ID is on, email notifications are on, find my iPad is on. What more does anyone need?

I do not need iPad backup, or iCloud photos, or auto updates, or cloud storage.

lol guy buys a 1tb iPad Pro and brags about 6gb of RAM in combo with the being so useful then turns off all of the functionality and uses that still wouldn't even begin to touch that 6gb. You should have gotten a less capable device if you wanted to turn off all it's useful features and notice a performance bump. As if the iPad Pro doesn't run butter smooth and snappy with all of that stuff on. what a joke.

How is it funny?

I’m after optimal performance. I’ll never be that guy, that says “hey why is my iPad running so hot? Or where’s my battery percentage gone off to? I’m just trying to normalize things, and know what my iPads doing, and when it is doing it, and it is only doing what I want, and or need it to do. These devices are built around the user. And I’m setting up mine how I like it.

Siri is on, location services are on, find my iPhone is on, FaceID is on, notifications for email are on, and notifications for messaging are on, and available update notifications are on too.

I’ve disabled background app refresh, and notifications from all apps besides messages, and FaceTime, and email, and the usual basics that I would want to be notified from. iCloud backup is off, and cloud storage is off from randomly uploading things.

Why would I want any of that on? I do not need every game I play to notify me, and I do not need every app single app to notify me either and constantly refresh.. And I do not need to upload things to some 50GB $1 per month cloud storage to save on space either.

What am I missing out on? You sir are unrealistic, and your trying to make me look stupid? I have no idea, but ok then.

It is funny. He bought the high end ipad but he could have saved a lot of money and had pretty much the same performance

You have no idea what your even saying lol. How’s that for funny.

Guess what?

Umm I did own the low end iPad Pro 11” with 64GB to start with. It was performance issues and running low on available ram that made me consider the 1TB with 6GB of ram.

I think the sarcasm comes from your first messages, where you try to apply things of a desktop OS to a much more optimized OS (without realizing that it is). And talk like if you are doing amazing things that make your ipad run so much better. With your tweaks, at best, you are saving some battery life. The latest ipad pros have such (underutilized) power that all you do makes no perceptible difference whatsoever. But if it makes you feel better, why not...
Sounds a bit like those that left their 1st gen ipad pro on ios 9 for maximum performance (giving up all the new features), when IOS 12 is even slightly faster than IOS 9 overall.

Your probably right thanks.. The thread was only intended for helpful information about general iOS tweaks, performance optimization. Now I can see there’s no such thing. Unless your device is 100 years old lol.

I’m new to iOS.

Anyways, this thread has gotten out of hand. And turned in to me apparently being funny, and or stupid for wasting my money.

Honestly, desktop OSes can deal with lack of RAM better than iOS can. Virtual memory on iOS isn't backed by storage last I checked. On a desktop OS, sure you get a bit of slowdown while swapping but at least you don't lose data.

Having 6GB is better than 4GB. However, I expect even multi-tab Safari can manage to max 6GB out. Modern webpages can be memory hogs (and tend to be less behaved compared to iOS apps). Don't have a 6GB iPad yet but even on my 4GB RAM iPads, I've still had to force close apps to get Safari working nicely again.

It had performance issues running what app? Genuinely curious here.

Adobe Rush, editing 4K 60fps video, after editing and adding in a few scenes, cuts, effects. The timeline preview would play at around 3 frames per second while it skipped and sputtered along. I could easily repeat the issue over and over.

It seems like a ram related issue, almost like micro stuttering. I could close the application and it would fix it for a minute or two only for it to return.. I was summing this up to the available 3.69GB of ram not being adequate for intensive use.

Minimizing Ark Survival evolved, or when you first load in to the game would present the same issues. Severe micro stuttering.

I couldn’t recreate the issue on an iPad with more ram.

I did not want to turn this thread in to a ram discussion. Naturally I can see it is headed in that direction. I feel like me and ruinonna and a few others have beat that poor ol’e dead horse to death lol!

Well, that’s an interesting point you make (as usual by the way). What I don’t agree with you on is with «a bit of »... Even with a (SATA) SSD, when you go over 80% of RAM usage (and it starts to swap to paging) the slowdown is more than just a bit in my experience... True, it’s better than reloading apps, but we should compare how well IOS 12 works compared to a Windows machine with equivalent RAM. And honestly, I still prefer IOS by far at 2 or 3 GB RAM. Especially 3. I still manage to do quite a bit of multitasking with my pro 9.7. No Windows with 2GB would be as fast. Sure, CPU helps, and sure, at some point there are app reloads, but it’s always fast with that little RAM. And my mini 5? I don’t know why, but it does miracles. I can use ton of apps and it does not reload... It seems even better than my 4GB RAM ipad pro 12.9 first gen (which cannot even do 3 apps at the same time...). I am amazed at how IOS multitasks with 3GB. Much better than all my 4GB devices (surface 3 and surface pro 3), let alone my galaxy s7, which reload like crazy with its 4GB.... Yes, you have no guarantee of when it will reload, but honestly I am pretty satisfied...

Man, let me sincerely congratulate with you for your honesty. I am relatively new to this forum (but not to ipads) and I have already seen several guys blindly attacking those that do not agree with them, trying to show they are better and more knowledgeble even when they aren’t. You are definitely not one of them. You have the honestly to react like you did to my comment. I think while at first you seemed like in your ivory tower, this comment makes you look much more honest and open to learning new things than you looked earlier.
Just to go to the subject, the big difference between desktop OSs and IOS is that the former pages to disk and slows down and the latter relies and compressed memory, which does not slow down the system, but at some point, when even compressing is not enough, will reload the app (with potential loss of whatever was pending). See the conversation between me and rui here for more info.

Lol, you won't see me arguing memory efficiency on Windows. I'd be the first to admit Windows is a RAM and storage hog. My PC builds have had 8GB standard since 2009 (back when the iPhone only had 256MB) and I moved to 16GB standard sometime in 2012/2013 (when iPads only had 1GB).

That said, I prefer lag over data loss. It's frustrating filling out long forms, opening some tabs to do some research and going back to the form tab only to find I have to redo the work. Granted, I don't encounter swapping issues often on my PCs (if at all).

The data points are useful regardless. 4k60 would be a fairly large memory hog, especially if you add effects so it makes sense that 6GB would have an impact, although I'm not sure about "Ark Survival" (sounds like a game?). Crudely speaking, 4k60 for 1 second, uncompressed, would occupy 3840 x 2160 (pixels) x 4 (bytes per pixel) x 60 (frames in one second) = 1.85GB which is a fair bit.

Could be that the apps themselves don't optimize memory well for iOS - hard to tell since I don't think e.g. iMovie has the same type of effects you use in Adobe Rush. Anyway as long as it makes the iPad Pro more productive to you I think the details don't matter.

I am not sure if it's just Windows or it's the combination of Windows plus Chrome/Firefox for me. Of course it depends on the usage. In my case I open a lot of tabs in those browsers and man can they take up RAM  . Usually Chrome and Firefox use at least 4/5 GB RAM on my laptop. That being said I am still using 8 GB RAM at home and my laptop can manage it. I will upgrade at some point up to 16 or even more (have two slots and can do up to 32 GB) but for now I can manage even with 8 GB. Then again honestly my laptop is everything but slow. It is actually faster than my iPad or my iPhone. Could be just my luck, could be the combination of CPU, RAM and SSD but man my machine never slows down and I tend to leave it on hibernate/sleep for months (meaning I put it to sleep every night and then I wake it up in the morning). I never have the feeling that I am waiting though. Everything happens instantly. And that is the end user experience that I have and that in the end matters.

That said, I prefer lag over data loss. It's frustrating filling out long forms, opening some tabs to do some research and going back to the form tab only to find I have to redo the work. Granted, I don't encounter swapping issues often on my PCs (if at all).

I agree with this. There is also another point for me. my iPad is WIFI. I hate when it reloads app constantly (especially with videos). When it comes to videos, this reloading that it does also generates more data traffic. My data plan is not super big and I do not want to waste data traffic in such things. Plus I forget where I was and I have to rewind the video again. It is annoying. There are cases where my apps are reloaded every minute or so. Like I work with Books or Notes app. I decide to check something in Safari for 30 seconds. I go back to Notes/Books and it gets reloaded. It is like WTF. Both iOS devices that I have do this constantly.

As for switching off stuff I have done different settings on my iPad and iPhone.

On iPad:

1. Basically switch Background refresh for any app that is not mail or chat (Skype, Facebook messenger and two work chat clients)

on iPhone:

1. By default Mobile Data is off, WIFI is off, Bluetooth is off, Location Services is off

I don't do this for battery optimization only. It is also for security. The more open the device is, the more vulnerable it is. Plus I don't want to get distracted at work. I connect my phones to Internet when I decide to check my notifications. It is basically pull mechanism for me and not push. Instead of seeing all notifications all the time and getting distracted constantly, I check them on my request when I decide to take break.
