Does anyone know how much it could possibly be to purchase the 8GB version, after activation fees and tax? Also, since it's "post-paid" service, I don't have to pay my first month during purchase, do I? I think I'll have around $660 or so at the I want to buy one.

all depends on tax...and whether AT&T waives the activation fee for new subscribers. Even 5% sales taxes brings you to $630. With even the first month's bill up front, you're out of luck...

activation fee is added to your first month's bill. they don't charge you your first month up front because they don't know if you'll go over on minutes and data and stuff. all you'll need to pay at time of purchase is $599 + tax + any accessories you buy + any security deposit if one is required. all other fees are on your first bill.

Do you have to pay the first bill up front? I mean, that's how much money I'll have saved at that date (I plan to get it July 6th). I've got plenty of stuff I can sell if I need some extra cash (including my body--might sell some plasma!)

Edit: Nevermind, that first question was answered before I got this posted. Also, I was wondering, I'm not sure if I've got any credit (I'm 20, with a MasterCard Debit card, and up until now, my parents have taken care of my cell phone plan on our family plan). So should I go in early and see if I can apply for credit (isn't there a form they can send in to set it up). If I need a deposit, does anyone know what it usually is?)

I dont think you have to pay the first bill up front - you do have to worry about that deposit though. Call AT&T ahead of time and ask them to run your credit to find out what yours would be. They'll have to run it again when you do finally go in to sign a contract, but this way you'll have an idea on how much it'll cost.

Not quite you are pre-approved for 30 days so you they won't have to run it again unless you go there 31 days after you had them check your credit.

Ya know I understand the concept of security deposits.Seeing how most carriers subsidize the cell phone. They want to be able to recover costs. But in the case of the iPhone.Folks are gonna pay full price for it up front. So why a deposit?

The deposit secures your line so they can deduct funds if you stop paying your bills. The amount they take from you is directly proportional to how likely you are to default on paying the SERVICE bills. Doesn't have anything to do with recovering the subsidy on the phone. It makes sure they get paid for the service.
