OS X May I have some recomendations from last decade?

Im looking for some good titles to play, may I get some recomendations? I prefer them to be from before 2008 as I like to play in MAX settings, and my Mac is only a 2010 MacMini. Therefore, current games are out.

I may have already played some of the most popular games, so feel free to surprise me.
 
It would be good to know what kinds of games you like, but here you go (some are older):

-Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, from GOG.com. My favorite TBS.
-System Shock 2
-Baldur's Gate I / II: Enhanced Edition
-The Myst series, though some of these may be unplayable in OS X. RivenX is a free utility that will allow you to play it (my favorite game of all time) and Uru is now open source.
-Psychonauts
-Knights of the Old Republic
- Penumbra games (Overture and Black Plague)

Some newer games that will play "maxed" no problem:
-The Walking Dead
-FTL
-Papers, Please
-Bastion
-Limbo
-Kentucky Route Zero (note: not a game, it's really magical realist interactive fiction. But it's amazing.)
-The Dream Machine
-Mark of the Ninja
-Machinarium

Thnaks. I will check them, I like allkinds of games. I already played:

Limbo
Knights of the Old Republic
Walking Dead
Bioshock
Bastion
Myst

I really disliked Walking dead and Bastion tough, loved the other ones.

Im surprised No One Lives Forever wasnt mentioned, my favorite game ever
 
Both of these supurb titles are more than a decade old, but they have staying power, and I assume they will run on your hardware- The original Half Life series (Mac Steam) would run on your setup. It's awesome if you like adventure/shooters. And also System Shock 2 which was recently added to Mac titles (horror/survival/shooter on a space ship).

I'd also highly recommend Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, but that would require a Windows install.

You can always go to gog.com, and look at the highest rated games there.

They have a wealth of games from pre-2012, and even some newer games with low demands on CPU/GPU.

The reviews are usually pretty good, and there is a wide range of genre's to choose from. They have a decent selection of Mac games, but if you are adventurous, many of the older Windows games will work via WINE (like Planescape: Torment -- a great game that never made it to the Mac).

until recently i had a 2009 mini, only replaced it with a refurbed 2011 iMac a few months ago


fallout 3 and fallout new vegas both played very well on bootcamp. not highest settings but good frame rates and great games. don't even think about sky rim it was like watching a power point slide show.

civ 4 was great, civ 5 was too much for the mini.

Really blew my mind that last decade was 200X and not 199X :eek:
 
Thanks guys! I actully palyed Halflife too and Portal. Loved them. I also really enjoyed X-men legends 2, I happen to have windows in bootcamp, so no game is out of reach

I believe Im gonna try Age of empires III or Resident Evil 4 or Vampire Masquerade
 
I have the Mac PowerPC version of No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way. Great game. And you will have to get the PC version if you want to run it on an Intel Mac.
 
A couple people, including the OP, have mentioned Half-Life, but are you including Half-Life 2? Because that may be the best game ever created to date. Not to mention it's episodes, particularly episode 2. While the original Half-Life was already a fantastic game, its successor literally blows it out of the water.

Haha, please do get the expansions too... Have to say that Age 3 was one of the most graphically beautiful games in 2006. Storyline of the first game was good but pretty short.

Do note that the PC/mac versions vary greatly too.

If you play on bootcamp you can toggle higher graphic settings (mac version was ported with lesser choices) and play online. The mac version lacks proper online matchmaking. Steam has the PC version on extreme discounts at times.

Both versions play maxed out on a 320m way above 60 fps at 1280X800.
 
For System Shock 2 in Steam, it says you need a 3D graphics card. Does anyone know if it runs on intel graphics ?
Not a question of power, I've got a 2013 MBA, but you never know. And does it work under Mavericks ?

It should work fine under Mavericks. Even basic integrated graphics are "3D." That system requirement is a throwback to the days when the game was released and not every computer had such capability.

It runs like a champ on the intel 4000HD, which is what I have in my 13" cMBP, late 2012.

Thing is, there are a ton of mods that enhance the experience, but they are problematic to set up in OS X.
 
2010 Mac mini. That is NVIDIA 320M, right? Do you still run Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or have you upgraded to newer OS X?

Also worth noting is their most recent Mac game dump includes non-Mac games, including two of the best RPGs of the modern era - Divine Divinity and Wizardry 8.
 
Just as a personal review, I recenlty played Quake 4, and I had no fun at all.

After playing No One Lives Forever, Half-Life/Half-Life2, Portal and Bioshock, I dont see how I can find Quake4 interesting

The above titles have the following positives:

-Very interesting weapons, with diferent types of ammo
-Complex Storyline
-You have to think where you are going, several puzzles

with Quake 4 all you do is press "Forward" and the Fire button and eventually you win the game. No thinking, no creativity, no challenge

So, if you havent cplayed any of the above Shooters, I recommend you check them out!

I looked back at my review from 2005 (which is hard because the site is long since defunct), and could sum it up as 'meh' ... looked great, but mediocre gameplay and a 'who cares' plot.

I know I own it digitally on Steam, but haven't even installed it ...

agree with that, loved the no one lives forever games (there was a sequel), the first max payne game, and XII were all great storylines whereas quake and doom....
