I left my iPad on a plane. It was not returned to me. :(

I rather liked the little guy, and whatever doubts I had about it seemed to disappear after I realized I no longer had it. I did miss it even after thinking I was sort of on the fence.

I want to replace the iPad, but decided to force myself to wait until Apple released the next revision to the iPad.

Well, now I'm thinking I'd rather have the MacBook Air.

My main uses would be:

kindle
netflix
general web surfing
watching movies
porn
mlb.com (iPad app did not have access to archived games)
email

Thinking about it, it really seems like the main differences would be:

OS X v. iOS (advantage Air)
Flash v. no Flash (advantage Air)
watching movies off my home server (advantage Air)
keyboard v. touch (toss up, I really liked having the touch UI, but having a keyboard and touchpad also offer their own advantages)
battery life (advantage iPad)
weight (advantage iPad)
price (advantage iPad)
email (advantage iPad, what a great email client it was)

I have a Windows computer with an i7 and 12GB of ram for HD editing and heavy stuff. I have a 2010 MBP 17" for heavy laptop use. So, this would strictly be a recreational device.

Am I thinking this through? I have the MBP 17" so, the air is just a smaller, lighter version of a laptop that I would never really use for Photoshop, or After Effects or any of that. The iPad is smaller and lighter still, and I really was impressed with the battery life on the iPad. I found steady use for my iPad, and would use my Air in much the same fashion. I liked apps as much as I found them frustrating.

I'm kind of leaning Air. In a couple of hours, I'll be leaning iPad. Argh.

I don't see Apple upgrading the Air that frequently, so, it seems like it should hold it's resale fairly well (like, into the summer) should I decide I want to punt on the idea.

For what I want to do (consume media), seems like the $999 version, even with the stock 2GB of ram would suffice. Is the 1.4GHz enough to watch high quality H264 video?

Well you list "porn" so wouldn't you want the iPad's touch screen ;)

The MacBook Air will be more convenient due to Flash support, since most of that stuff are streaming. But then again, the iPad's form factor makes it much easier to use in bed, even when lying down. Pretty useful for you doing the... *cough* deed comfortably. Also, as previously stated, the iPad's touch screen and IPS technology makes it a desirable device for this purpose. The amazing viewing angle ensures perfect colour saturation at all angles - something important when you indulge yourself in this form of media.

As for the lack of Flash support, I think you should learn to download the videos and stream with Air Video. The quality will usually the significantly better anyway.

Jokes aside, I don't really think the MacBook Air is necessary when you already have a fully featured MacBook Pro. The iPad is half the weight of the MacBook Air and it will do most of these things better than the MacBook Air because of its form factor.

The MacBook Air can even function as a primary computer. It has a very good GPU for its thinness, and when you add a 4GB RAM module to it together with the SSD, it pretty much beats the pants off most primary computers people use nowadays. It's too luxurious as a recreational device, in my opinion.

If you already have a MBP and a desktop would you really need a 3rd computer? iPad might be best for you.

Mine was stolen a couple months ago - dont really miss it, and I think as a 2nd unit a MBA would work better than an iPad.

What can the MBA do that his MBP can't do? Except the fact the MBA is lighter and has an SSD.

The iPad, on the other hand, is something that will fill in roles the MacBook Pro can't fill.

If you already have other computers where you can do work, then it doesn't really make sense to plunk down 1k for an Air. The iPad will suit your needs just fine, and it will make a much more comfortable E-reader than the Air.

Besides, seeing as you already have a great laptop, you'd probably just want to keep using that for your work (better productivity) than an 11 incher.
