Will the MB be upgraded to a Merom chip at the same time as the MBP (around WWDC, perhaps), or will the MB get the Merom months later?

Will Apple want to use the chip to differentiate their consumer and pro lineups, or not?

Apple may or may not switch chips at all or at least for a while. We'll have to wait and find out. Most probably, Apple will make it a build option. Whether to up the processor or not. Reason saying, all laptops in the line right now are made with The Intel Core Duo. I doubt very much they'd switch, and the processor difference, very noticeable between the Intel Pentium M Processor (I had a 1.6 GHz Pentium M Processor that was roughly equivalent to the Pentium 4 Processor w/o hyperthreading). Also, the major thing about Intel Core Duo 2 is the embracing of 64-bit rather than 32-bit.

I would guess that Apple would upgrade to the new chips immediately. If Apple doesn't use them, then other computer makers most definitely will. They are the new intel chips... Do you honestly think Apple will let it's computers fall behind while Dell adopts a faster chip? Apple has always been cutting edge.

In this new world of intel chips, where new ones come out more rapidly, Apple has to be prepared to make the changes. We're just used to waiting several years between chip upgrades... this is a whole new ballgame, and I'm sure Apple is ready to play ball.

As for giving them to the macbook, maybe only the black one... The MBPs will get them right away.

Of course I don't know for sure on any of this, but it's fun to guess!

Wow someone forgot the G4 notebooks pretty quickly. ;)

Yes but this is a whole new game, with FreeScale, Apple used the best the could(which for the basic user it was fine) Apple tries to use the best chip from there chip maker.

Is Core Duo going to stay as a low end chip or is it done after Merom and Conroe

apple has consolidated their product line. there are only three notebooks left: 13" MacBook, 15"Macbook Pro and 17"Macbook Pro.

So the old difference between the two cheap iBooks and the three expensive professional Powerbooks doesn't really exist anymore.

Also the Mac's get compared to PC's of similar price/spec. And many PC makers will switch to Merom immediately or lower their prices a lot (because merom is a better chip for the same price).

Therefore i guess they will update them at the same time, give or take a couple of weeks to clear the distribution channels and get production running.

The issue is, they're pushing all these computers on the line right now (they introduced the macbook what, not three months before Merom and Conroe go out on the market. That doesn't seem smart of Apple. Why didn't they wait?

It's only my opinion, but...

I think Apple put the CoreDuo in the MacBook knowing they're going to upgrade the MacBook Pro this summer. I wouldn't expect the MacBook to get bumped right away. I just think it's suspect they put the processor from the MBP into the MB. No seperation of the lines.

Merom in the MBP yes, in the MB, not yet.
