MB C2D 2.0 GHz or MBP CD 1.83 Ghz

Hey,

At work I have a 15" MacBook Pro Core Duo at 1.83 GHz with 512mb of ram.

I'm leaving for school in September, so I got a 13" MacBook Core 2 Duo 2GHz with 1 gb of ram.

Both are refurbs.

Now, my boss said the person coming in to take my job won't need the same power out of the computer as I have, since his skills are different, they are sharing some of my optional responsibilities to the propers areas.

So, he offered that I could take the MacBook pro for the MacBook if it was better for me. He doesn't really know the specs for either, but said I could swap the ram if I wanted to. Is that possible? And is it a better deal to go with the older MacBook Pro, even though it's only a Core Duo at 1.83 GHz? Or keep with the newer MacBook with the faster and upgraded chip?

Well, the MBP has the larger screen and dedicated graphics card. The MB, as you said, would have a faster and newer processor.

Which is more important to you? Go with that machine.

If you are going to keep it for a while I would go with the MacBook I expect with the CD only being 32bit and the C2D being 64 bit there will be a time within 5 years or so that OS X will no longer support the CD chips. But if you are you planning to upgrade before that I would say Keep the MacBook Pro. The extra video abilites is probably more of a performance boost in real life then then the faster chip. As well If it has more RAM stay with it. CPU speed is greatly over estimated. My old PowerBook 667 Mhz runs faster then my wifes 1.0 ghz iBook. The RAM and Video really make the difference.

The MacBook has more ram at this point - but I was wondering if anyone knew if the ram was interchangable. I would just check, but I'm at work right now, and don't want to turn them off.

Yup, both the MB and MBP take DDR2 200-pin SODIMMs.

I checked through the "About This Computer" menu item, and the MBP only has one 512 ram stick in, so all the ram sticks i have is 512 (3) and the MB needs 2 of the same sticks. I'd have to buy more ram to make it 1gb.... :S

I don't know... I tinker on the internet a lot more than anything else, and the MB has better support for wireless - including draft n support. The MBP Reception has always sucked compared to my brothers MB. Also, the MB has Dual Layer DVD burning support. I don't know, I'm finding I favour the MB right now, but I have some time to choose. Better Battery life, smaller power brick, probably more suitable for school in Northern England....
