hey all. ive been using my mac for around 7 months now and its been more or less fine until now. just the other day, i was starting up a few programs and i noticed that the loading time for each app had grown to be about 10-20 seconds each. ive been running the same few apps, but since it's gotten so slow, i'm even afraid to open up my dashboard.. even the typing freezes every few seconds for around half a second, no matter what application im typing into. has anyone else been experiencing this problem and how did you guys deal with it? thanks a lot.

How much ram do you have?
Is all the ram showing up in System Profiler?
How much spare HD space do you have?
Is it still slow after a reboot?

thanks for the quick reply.

RAM: 1GB
SP RAM: 512 in bank 0, 512 in bank 1
Remaining HD: 25.87 GB
Reboot: yes its just as slow as before, if not slower.

Go to disk utility and verify your disk, this may bring up any errors with the disk.

have you installed anything recently.

You can also try reinstalling the latest combo update, but would save this until we have ruled out disk problems.

hey i just spent 20 minutes verifying the disk and the disk utility told me that everything was fine. is there any other solution? if not, ill backup my files and try reinstall osx.

Before you reinstall OS X, I would run something like Tech Tool Pro (that is of course of you have it). If you have a program that can check your entire computer for errors (hardware and software alike), that would be a good idea. Furthermore, I would optimize your drive (if you can, twice would be best). If that doesn't work, then I would just wipe it out. Its possible that some application or something of the like has corrupted the the OS.

Also, you haven't had any hardware accidents like dropping the machine or spilling anything on it? That could mess things up as well.

You can reapply the lastest update (use the combo version). This will take only a fraction of the time to reinstall the OS and has solved a few problems i've had in the past.

-repair permissions
-run disk warrior
-Check your network as any mounted shares that are acting funny will seriously slow you down
-clear caches
-if you have only a few gig of space free on your startup disk, free up more
