Is there a way to make my macbook (not MBP) screen secondary and an external monitor the primary display, but only when the external is connected? Basically, I want my dock and toolbar on the external monitor since it's directly in front of me whereas my macbook is off to the side.

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement

Once there you will see the two screens. The MB will l have a white bar representing he menu bar on it. Drag the white bar onto the other screen.

There you go, external monitor as the primary display.

Just remember to rearrange things if you must do a powerpoint presentation so that the projector is secondary. That way the Mac version of powerpoint propery displays the preview and notes on the laptop and the preso on the projector.

Cheers,
