I'm planning on buying one of these machines for university this summer.

It dawned on me that I could get a macbook with an external display for around the same cost. I'm still leaning towards the pro machine, as it could completely replace my pc desktop, in addition to being a mac laptop.
But if I went the macbook/display route, I'd have a more portable computer on the go, and lots more real estate at home.
I was just wondering if anyone has any pictures of the two side-by-side. I can't find any, either on the forum or google, and I would assume it to be a fairly common comparison.
I'd also gladly accept any personal experiences.

I just got myMBP, and I'm loving it. I too was thinking about getting a MB. With the saved money I was planning on getting a 20" ACD. I'm glad to say I went for the MBP. This thing is fast!

I have a 15" MBP (dual 2.0, the 256 Radeon card). My friend recently purchased a stock black MacBook.

The 15" screen on the MBP is definitely nice. On the other hand, the MacBook is, in my view, the "perfect" laptop size. It'd be a tough call if I had to make the decision again today. I suppose it depends if you ever plan to buy a 30" monitor (which the MBP can power, but the MacBook cannot).

I also very much prefer the look of the Pro series. There's no substitute for that metal beauty.

How much do you intend to carry your laptop around? Would the size of the 15" be prohibitive? If you think most of your time will be away from your desk with the laptop and you can afford the extra bulk of the Pro, then go with that machine - it's gorgeous, and it can game.

Otherwise, if you'll be at home and you think you want to work on a 20" + display most of the time, and your budget is limited, then I suppose go with the MacBook and the screen. Think about how you'll be using the laptop the most.

One thing is for sure: I don't think you'll be disappointed if you end up with the MacBook... my friend's was pretty impressive, performance-wise.

Wow. Thanks for the links guys, exactly what I was looking for.
The extra two inches on the MBP look HUGE....
I plan on working a lot in the library, starbucks, or even outside during the brief canadian summer. I also really want to dump this gaming pc.
It seems like the MBP is the right choice for me.

In terms of portability, my MBP is fine. I have no trouble lugging it around. For the two inch decrease in screen size, you might expect the macbook to be lighhter than it is.

MBP, then go for a matching ACD when you can afford it. :)

I think there's a lot to be said for this plan of attack - buy the uber laptop now, and get a bigger screen for it when you can afford one. Best of both worlds. And by the way, when I got my MacBook Pro, I used it for a week while my 23" stayed off, just because I was having so much fun. I recently left my apartment for about 3 weeks and used the 15" screen exclusively. Didn't really feel impaired by it... it's a perfectly usable screen size.

Go for MB if you dont need dedicated grafix. Other than that MB is as good as the MBP in all aspects with a smaller size and lesser no of problems.
