Thats the question. The only thing I'm not sure about is that the pages on the website say the HDD used is 4200RPM. does anyone know if the chipset would support a higher RPM HDD?

If so, then with a bit of open heart surgery we could replace the 120GB HDD with a much larger HDD in the MBA.. Thoughts anyone?

it needs to be 1.8" and 5mm thick (if 2nd generation thickness is the same as 1st). i don't know of any 500GB 1.8" 5mm thick drives, but maybe i've been out of the loop.

You can certainly replace the hard drive, but only with another 1.8" model. The 500GB drives of which you speak are currently 2.5" drives, but doubtless more capacity will be squeezed into the 1.8" format soon.

I don't think you'll see a 500GB 1.8" 5mm HD, ever. The future is SSD and by the time a 500GB SSD becomes affordable, your Air will be a dinosaur.

Any idea what the highest capacity 1.8" drive is currently?

1st gen Air is 80GB from Samsung. 2nd gen Air is 120GB from Toshiba.

Below are the specs for 80GB HS082HB/A. This is the biggest capacity HD that will fit is the Air Unless you go SSD.

Stock HD is: HS082HB/A
