Hi, I'm having an issue with my trackpad (MBA 2010 13"). It won't click properly, it feels different, just like something got stucked under it, and the click sound is also different. I read that some people got this issue too and they said the problem is the screws which not attached properly or have loosen. I bought this laptop (new) around first week of april, without an apple care. Do you think they will charge fee for this since I've never done anything physically to this MBA that will void the warranty.

Since this is my first time, do i need to make an appointment first with the apple store or could I just go there without any appointment? And if I need to make an appointment, could any1 guide me how to, I'd prefer online form than telephone line if possible since english is not my first language. Last thing, any form or receipt or anything should I bring to them (except the MBA lol)?

Oh yeah, I'm an international student who lives in WA, US.

Thanks a lot for your help..

Every mac comes with a 1-year warranty standard, so since the computer is only a few months old, you will still be covered. You likely won't have to pay anything.

Making a genius bar appointment is a good idea since you can decide what time is best for you. If you're a college student in Washington State, chances are the closest Apple Store is also filled with other college students who have problems with their Macs. Making an appointment means that you won't be wasting your time. A receipt is not necessary as the warranty is tied to the Serial Number of the computer.

If you're a University of Washington student, I think the closest store is the one at University Village
To the far right side of the page, there is a picture that looks like an atom that says Genius Bar. Under that is a link that says "Reserve". Click that and follow the instructions on the page.

If you want to find a different store, go to http://www.apple.com/retail/locator/ and fill in the Zip Code or City/State, select the store and choose "Hours and Information".

I have the same exact problem on my MB and I went to a genius who wasnt nice at all and kind of looked at me like i have three heads he did say we could adjust the trackpad but he was basically saying there is nothing wrong with the trackpad. he was no genius I will tell you that! I do have applecare but I also bought an onsite warranty (dont ask) but I did. I know why spend the money blah blah blah....

However they come onsite to my house with a new trackpad :)

what kind of a sound is your trackpad making? I feel that mine sounds to loud and "clicky" comparing with other MBAs I've tried, and I'm thinking whether I should go and try to ask them adjust it or something.

Thanks, it's so easy to make an appointment with them, thx a lot buddy..

Well, that was what i was afraid of.. Sometimes though we still have a valid warranty, some1 with applecare looks like more VIP and you know.. Mine is not like an adjustment, first it sounds that the clicks getting weaker and weaker, and now it sounds nothing and really clicks nothing though it's still working (when i pressed it, it still commands the MBA that i clicked something)

You know what, nothing.. It really sounds nothing right now and doesn't feel that i'm clicking it, though inside the computer it still command that i'm clicking it.. I love mac's trackpad, it's cool though first time i feel weird with "click wherever you want" trackpad, but again, it's nice to have that "click wherever you want" thingy..

So, any tips what I should avoid or say to make it easier when meeting the genius? Thanks a lot guys anyway..

I bought an MBA and had issues with the trackpad. The Apple genius agreed and sent it in for repair - they replaced topcase (couldn't do it in store since I upgraded to 4GB ram). Came back a week later, new topcase, still didn't work, took it back to genius again, he agreed it still had problems, but all he could offer was to send it in for repair again. I decided forget it and called the Apple support number and returned it for refund, then bought a new MBP.

Can't you just ask for a replacement? Because mine was upgraded to 4GB ram also.. Reading your words, a week later, that really scares me, a week without my only computer.. Anyway, how much you got your money back for your MBA? 100% hopefully?

They can only replace in-store if they have the same specs available in the store inventory. In my case, the 4GB ram upgrade over the base model was not stocked in store.

When I complained to apple support they issued an RMA, I returned the MBA and got a full refund.

I loved the MBA, but to me two failures in two weeks was too much to deal with; it just gave me the feeling that this particular MBA was a lemon.

I bought a 13" MBP instead, and it runs fine and has zero problems. It's heavier, but I'd rather have a reliable laptop than a lightweight one with problems.

wow, full refund.. that's nice..

well, I brought it to apple store today and they will replace the trackpad, a couple days to ship the trackpad and 3 days to repair it, which means 3 days without any computer..

Glad to hear everything went well for you. I had a Genius Bar appointment of my own today to take my sister-in-law's MacBook in to get looked at, though I was at Southcenter.

Just make sure that you have all of your data backed up. As good as they are, you never know what might possibly go wrong. As a student, your computer is replaceable, but your data is not.

And really, you should be backing up anyway if you're not already.

Don't worry, I have like 3 copy in 3 ext. hdd lol.. backuping a very small sized SSD is easy..
