MBA and Iphone Concern

So I've convinced myself to get a mba over a mbp as my main laptop. This will be my first mac and extremely excited for the new mba. I'll continue to keep my main desktop a win7 pc.

I have a 32gb iphone which is synced to my PC. Now, I was excited to link up my iphone with my new mba for synergy, but then I realized my mp3 collection is around 60gb. Granted, not all the songs are on my iphone, but I like the idea of being able to pick whatever songs from my collection and drop it in there.

I was planning on just making my mac the homebase for all my apple products (iphone/ipad), but after realizing the 60gb collection, would a 256gb SSD mba suffice for that? Also, I wanted to install bootcamp/win7 on my mba.

Dang, this might push me to getting a mbp just for the ease of my mp3 collection/ios apps, but I really love the design and portability of the mba.

Advice? How about if I have an external HD to my mac with my collection? But if I'm on the go without it and I sync my iphone, will it erase all the songs from my iphone since the external isn't available?

60 Gigs of Music

I am not sure why you would buy a highly portable machine and then want to sync 60G of music to it. Wouldn't that be the definition of what you would use the new cloud sharing to accomplish? Boot Camp and Win 7 take 10-20 G depending on how much software you want. I quit using boot camp when vmware and parallels both took off. I can't think of much that you can't do in them except maybe gaming but if you want a gaming machine then the MBA is probably not the best choice anyway.

I am running an 11.6 with 128GB SSD HD. I have 58.3 GB of music on it and two 2GB movies. It is the machine I sync both my iPhone4 & IPad2 with. Even with ALL my documents, pictures and programs, I still have over 20GB available. I run iWork09, iLife11, Office Pro 2011, and various ripping-burning apps like Handbrake & a couple small word processors for fiction writing (my hobby)

If there is a 256 GB SSD option, it will be plenty big enough for you. Even if it's still only 128 GB it will certainly work.

Buy a used Mac Mini (an old one will do) and keep all your data there to save space on your air for work space. Look at what data you actually use on the go and it becomes pretty apparent what you don't need to have on your portable.

Hmm, let's see. Is 256gb bigger than 60gb? If my math is correct, I believe it is. So yes, your music collection will fit. And you'll still have around 180gb left over (formatting the drive will take around 20gb out).

Win 7 will take around 20gb plus whatever programs you want to run on there.
OSX takes around 10gb.

If you need more storage, get and external drive for some of the music you don't listen to as much. Yes, it's nice to have it all with you all the time, but do you really listen to ~12000 songs on a regular basis? Have you ever even listened to all of them once?

Just press sort by times played and take all of the ones you rarely (if ever) listen to and stick them on an hdd or flash drive.

Of course, if music is your biggest space hog, then you'll still have plenty of space left over after your 60gb.

Great Advice. Also, I might consider getting that mac mini for that very purpose. Good idea.

Question though, if I were to just keep my music on an external and use the mba for itunes. If I sync itunes to my iphone without the HD, will it erase the music off the iphone?
