MBA: connects to MacMini fine, but still get error message that won’t go away: “There was a problem connecting to the server “MacMini”.

I recently bought a MacBook Air running El Capitan. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my existing MacBookPro running Snow Leopard. I also have a MacMini running Mountain Lion on my Network.

Here’s what’s happening on the MacBook Air: I can connect to both the MacBookPro and MacMini fine. But when the MacBook Air starts up, I get a message saying: “There was a problem connecting to the server “G4”. (G4 is an old computer that isn’t even on the network anymore.)

When I click “ok” the “G4” error message goes away. But then I get the same message for the “MacMini.” And it won’t go away. I click “ok” and it comes back in a few minutes.

When I turn off Firewall on the MacBook Air, I don’t get the error message, but of course I want to keep the Firewall activated, so this is extremely frustrating.

Prior to OSX Macs were so simple to troubleshoot. I’m really starting to hate them now.

If anyone has a solution, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have a similar mix of machines… MBA running Mountain Lion. Mini as a server running Mountain Lion and another Mini running El Capitan. Never saw that message on any of them. But I have the firewall turned off on all machines...

Hey, thanks for the reply. Is there a reason you keep firewall turned off? I tend to think it would be a worthwhile safeguard to have active.

I never really saw the need, have never used it and I have been on the Mac since 1985 with no problems. :)
I’ve always assumed the firewall was beneficial, but maybe it’s not really necessary. I’ll have to do some reading on the topic. Thanks.

hi So you believe its the connection? That seems to be what youve written in your post; unless I read it wrong; and I dont think I did; that cant be proven to my satisfaction; I was happy reading your post despite any negative feelings the failed connection might have brought to me .
