Click on the Apple in the top left corner. Click "About this Mac". Click "More Info"

(If your machine cost you 1299.00 US, you have the "base" model with 2GB of RAM, 128 SSD drive and 1.86 GHz processor.)

The "ultimate" is nothing official, at least to my knowledge.

I use it to refer to my 13' that has all the upgrades apple offers

The base MBA comes with 2GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. Available upgrades include:
4GB Ram
256GB SSD
2.13 Ghz processor

When you have all 3 upgrades... that is what people term "ultimate".

Originally the Apple stores were only stocking base models, and everything else needed to be ordered online as a config to order purchase. Now they stock a few different versions... including the ultimate.

If you decide you want to upgrade, there is a pretty good chance that your apple store will let you upgrade without paying a restocking fee. If that is important to you... I would not delay.

Correct. There is nothing official that says 'Ultimate'. It's just a term people use to describe the model that has the maxed out specs.

If you happen to be in Virginia, the people at the Apple Store in Richmond are very nice. They will almost certainly help you with a new order/exchange for the "ultimate" model (with which you are now familiar) at full credit for your base model.

Ps

Since you're switching, if you can afford it and make time to use it often, the One To One program would be very valuable to you, as well.
(No, I don't work for Apple.)

The only way you could upgrade is if you're within your return window and can return it. You'd have to pay the restocking fee and then the additional difference between your model and the upgraded model. However, as mentioned before, there are nice Apple Stores/Employees out there that could potentially help you with waiving the restocking fee, or allowing you to exchange beyond your return window.

Best of luck if you go this route!

Yes, there ARE some nice Apple people out there. My wife was able to (last week) exchange her 3 month old, sat-on-her-desk, unused Mac Mini for an 11.6" MBA base-model. She paid the restocking fee for the Mini ($69), the difference in price between the two machines and sales tax on the difference.

She was very fortunate to be able to get this done, and I don't recommend it as a course of action, but it never hurts to ask. My limited experience with Apple is that they are normally gracious and willing to please and will *usually* bend over backwards to help a customer upgrade to a more expensive product.

She loves her Air as it's a better fit for her than the Mini and is one happy camper.

Caveat emptor and all that, but it never hurts to ask (nicely)...

You may be able to upgrade your machine by exchanging it for another, as others have stated, but you can only do this within a certain time window. And you CANNOT upgrade parts of the machine by swapping them for other parts. The RAM, for example, is soldered onto the logic board. So the only way of upgrading the memory is to get a new machine!

Eventually, the main thing one may upgrade in the MBA is the SSD Ram drive. That is not soldiered but plugged in.

Yesterday you said that you had it for 1.5 weeks... so you still should be within the 14 day return period. Technically, they should charge you a restocking fee... but they have been really good about waiving the fee if you upgrade. This is not guaranteed. I would not delay, as your chances of a waived-fee upgrade diminishes as you go past the 14 day return window.
